Important Tips On Security Officer Certification

By Krystal Branch

Some people may wonder what a security officer does or how they get their certifications. It is important to note that opportunities and resources abound for people seeking security officer certification, but only those who are truly dedicated and courageous will actually pass the test. Such professionals are employed by either a contract company or a proprietary organization offering these safety services. Their duty is to protect people and property from criminals seeking to harm, rob, damage or destroy them. The safety and well-being of individuals and corporations depends largely upon these guards, who should take their responsibilities seriously. Consider the following factors into becoming one of these valuable employees.

Always learn about the basic requirements for this certification and try to adhere when applying. These requirements may vary depending on the State or country you are in. For some States in the U. S, an applicant must have attained 18 or 21 years of age, a permanent citizen or resident alien. They also should have no conditions whether physical or medical that can have them declared incompetent. Other issues would be dependency on drugs and other addictive substances.

Besides these, an applicant must also meet training requirements, which also vary according to state. One state requires a four-hour course that includes, but is not limited to, one hour each of orientation; emergency procedures; legal powers and limitations of an officer in this field; and other training in the area of non-lethal weapons. Other states require an eight-hour course for the same.

Find out about the required licenses. This will attract some fee beside the training charges. The price for both training and licensing may range between $20 and $300. Have in mind that the application fee is in most cases not refundable.

Every armed officer must renew their license after two years. This goes in hand with a four-hour refresher course on firearms use. Officers who do not pass this course will hardly qualify for their licenses. This means they lose their job or repeat the course until the examiners feel the trainee is fit for the work.

There are various institutions offering courses for those pursuing certification. These institutions provide classroom learning, hands-on training, practice and drills, self-study, and e-learning. Some of the classes students will take are basic criminal justice, private security, basic first aid, use of force, search and seizure. In addition to traditional classroom lectures, applicants can also participate in small group discussions and simulated experiences.

Besides completing assignments, students must also pass a written exam with a minimum passing score of 75 percent. Many schools require a valid photo ID, as well as a set of the individual fingerprints. Online courses present a viable alternative for those who need more flexibility in time or finances for their education.

Certified professionals have employment opportunities with various organizations. Security agencies, public schools, businesses and housing complexes are among the areas such professionals can offer their services. One can also grow in their career and join agencies like homeland security, law enforcement, public safety and criminal investigation departments. Even if attaining a security officer certification may take your time and resources, this is a very noble vocation. It is greatly beneficial not only to the officers but also the community.
